Dr. Counsell graduated from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine in 1985. He completed his Internal Medicine residency at Akron City Hospital, Akron, Ohio and Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine (NEOUCOM) in 1988. He completed fellowship training in academic general internal medicine at Indiana University School of Medicine in 1989 and a geriatric medicine fellowship at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in 1990. Dr. Counsell is Board Certified in Internal Medicine with a Certificate of Added Qualifications in Geriatric Medicine.
Dr. Counsell was recruited to Indiana University School of Medicine in 1997 to become the founding Director of the IU Geriatrics Program. He is also the Director of Geriatrics for IU Medical Group -- Primary Care and is responsible for clinical geriatrics services at Wishard Health Services and Clarian Health Partners. Dr. Counsell is the principle investigator for an NIA funded clinical trial of the Geriatric Resources for Assessment and Care of Elders (GRACE) intervention aimed at improving quality of care and outcomes in low-income seniors receiving primary care through an urban safety-net health system. For establishing the Senior Care at Wishard and GRACE programs, Dr. Counsell received the Tony and Mary Hulman Health Achievement Award for Excellence in the field of Geriatrics and Gerontology in 2002.
Dr. Counsell was named to the Editorial Board of the Geriatrics Review Syllabus -- 6th Edition of the American Geriatrics Society (AGS) in 2003 and was presented by AGS in 2007 with the Dennis W. Jahnigen Memorial Award for outstanding contributions to education in the field of geriatrics. Dr. Counsell has recently been awarded a Packer Policy Fellowship by The Commonwealth of Australia Department of Health and Aging and The Commonwealth Fund allowing him to study health policy development and models of healthcare for older adults in Australia during a sabbatical leave in 2008.
