Cecilia Hendricks Wahl was a community leader, writer, and member of a devoted IU faculty family; she exemplified the true spirit of volunteer service and dedication. The Wahl family spent seven years in the Pacific Islands after World War II, where Cecilia taught children and was the editor of an in-house periodical. Upon her return to Bloomington, she served for 15 years at IU, initially as secretary of the Board of Trustees.
During her retirement, she was active in diverse civic and philanthropic organizations, capped by three terms as chair of the Bloomington Hospital Board. Cecilia's ability to defuse controversial issues, reach compromises, build teams, and her vision and steadiness made a permanent, beneficial impact on the Bloomington community.
She continued to assist the IU Alumni Association in many ways, including through service on its Executive Council, and as an advisor and board member for her college sorority, Kappa Kappa Gamma. Cecilia was recognized with the Gertrude Rich Award and the Distinguished Alumni Service Award; her quiet competence and dynamic leadership made her a strong example of commitment and generosity.
