For more than 50 years, as a medical student, practicing urologist, hospital medical staff leader, clinical faculty member, and a valued member of IU's Medical School Admissions Committee and the Dean's Council, Charles J. Van Tassel, Jr. was an enthusiastic supporter of IU, in every aspect. His commitment to medical education, high quality health care, and cooperation among Indianapolis hospitals has been invaluable; he was also a leader in civic humanitarian service in Indianapolis and across the state.
Dr. Van Tassel received the 1995 Otis R. Bowen, M.D. Distinguished Leadership Award, which recognizes members of the School of Medicine Dean's Council who have demonstrated exemplary leadership on behalf of their school. He was instrumental in fundraising for the School of Medicine, the Wells Scholars Program, IU athletics, and the IU Foundation, where he served as a board member.
Dr. Van Tassel's contributions to the organization and effectiveness of the Varsity Club have been invaluable. His enthusiasm and public relations skills drew a multitude of members into this support group for IU athletics; his powerful influence and scrupulous adherence to policies of ethical conduct assured harmony among the many interested groups.
