About Dean L. Barnhart

Dean Leffel Barnhart’s career can be compartmentalized into copious sections of service to his Alma Mater and his State. Following an outstanding college career which included membership in the first journalism class, in the initial student class elected to Phi Beta Kappa, and on the charter Union Board, he served at all levels of the small town newspaper world.

He perceived the need to educate, to legislate, to improve man’s understanding of the disease of alcoholism, and he used the medium of journalism to its highest degree of effectiveness in this cause. He brought distinction to his Alma Mater, to his State, and to himself by founding the Workshop on Problems of Alcoholism and Alcohol Education and by serving as Director of education of the Division of Alcoholism of the State Board of Health. All who associated with him derived pleasure, knowledge, and a greater insight into those qualities of human dignity and accomplishment to which every man aspires.

Dean won basketball letters in 1909, 1910 and 1911, captain in 1910. He was the top player on a team that won IU's first varsity "I" in basketball in 1909. Dean tied IU scoring record with 21 points against DePauw in 1909 and broke the IU record with 25 points against DePauw in 1911. Six times in his career scored more points than IU's opponent.
