Jane Bayer Butcher met the highest potential of her own talents, using the solid base of her liberal arts education as merely a beginning point. A leader in every community in which she lived, and an integral part of her husband's successful Marine Corps career, she gave of herself with steadfastness, optimism, and dedication, assisting the Navy Relief Society, translating her knowledge of the needs of servicemen and women into long-time, honored membership on the National Council of the USO. Upon retirement in Bloomington, she embarked on a whole new career of volunteerism, leading the United Way through notably successful campaigns, serving as a board member for the Public Health Nursing Association and several entities of the Local Council of Women, and continued to remain active in numerous civic and social organizations.
Eternally young and ever ready to serve her Alma Mater, Jane Butcher exercised her talents on a host of boards and committees. She received the Gertrude Rich Award and the Outstanding Alumni Award from the College of Arts and Sciences/Graduate School. Each of the pearls in her chain of life represents a commitment made, a job well done, a new road traveled, a fresh idea explored, a friendship treasured.
