About Margaretta S. Tangerman

Margaretta Sackville Tangerman's life was marked by achievement in social service, teaching, and administration that aided thousands of people, and demonstrated her strong concern for humanity. After an initial career in the world of banking, her chief interest turned to social work, which quickly became her avocation.

Margaretta came to Indiana University to study the field of sociology and served as a resident counselor in the the residence halls; she graduated with high honors and several achievement awards. After graduate study at the University of Chicago, and service with the Lake County Public Welfare Department, Margaretta joined the faculty of Valparaiso University to work in the social work department. She later became the head of that department and Dean of women.

Many generations of students benefited from her guidance and genuine interest in young people. She brought deep concern to many areas of social work, and dedicated herself to all worthy causes and needs. Margaretta's intelligence, accomplishment and character evoked the admiration of everyone around her, and was recognized many times with honors and awards.
