- Distinguished Alumni Service Award - 1969
Miles Shumaker Barton's career has been distinguished by a strong dedication to youth, the art of swimming, and the progress of amateur athletes. As a lifelong Hoosier, he extended Indiana's fame through these interests, nationally and internationally. A life member of the Amateur Athletic Union and past president of its Indiana section, he was organizer and administrator of countless meets and clinics. His selection as official judge in four successive Olympic Games capped years of officiating in A.A.U., A.C.A.A. and community contests. Barton was tireless, dynamic and generous, and he affected the lives of many young men and women whom he counseled and inspired, sharing with them his time, his substance and his home. He was also winner of the National Rotary Achievement Award, the Keystone National Award of Boys Clubs of America, and the 1969 Big Wheel Award of I.U.’s Sigma Delta Chi’s.
