About Philip B. Reed

Philip Byron Reed's experience as a long-distance runner provided the stern discipline and determination needed to work his way through medical school. After graduating with highest honors from the Indiana University School of Medicine, he joined its faculty for thirty years, providing didactic and clinical instruction for medical students, interns and residents. Dr. Reed's personal and intellectual commitment to his skills led to a deep involvement in American psychiatry, earning him the highest accolades from many peers.

While employed at the Norway's Psychiatric Hospital, he developed a foundation that was dedicated to high standards of care, and the training of mental health personnel, which laid the groundwork for clinical psychology internships and psychiatric residencies. Dr. Reed committed the bulk of his assets to the IU School of Medicine for the establishment of the Albert Eugene Sterne Chair of Psychiatry in Clinical Research. He also proposed and founded the L.C. Hayes Memorial Scholarship Fund, in honor of the significant influence his university track coach had on his life.
