About Robert H. Frowick

In 1953, with his BA completed, Robert H. Frowick joined the U.S. Air Force and became a pilot in the Military Transport Service. Three years later he returned to IU to earn a master’s degree in government and joined the Department of Defense as an intelligence analyst. He then went to Yale University as an Overbrook Fellow, earned a master’s in international relations, and passed the Ph.D., comprehensive exams and the Foreign Service exams in the same year. That marked the beginning of an outstanding diplomatic career, which has taken him from Washington to summit meetings, conferences, and assignments in Montreal, Prague, Rome, Brussels, Bucharest, Vienna, Warsaw, and Paris.

Among the history-making activities in which he had an active role, Frowick, who held the rank of ambassador, was executive secretary of a meeting of foreign ministers of the Conference on Security and Cooperation in European that paved the way for the reunification of Germany. He headed several U.S. delegations to CSCE meetings and recently was called out of retirement to work with a peace-keeping mission for Bosnia. In 1993 he was named a Distinguished Citizen Fellow of IU’s Institute for Advanced Study, and continued for many years to be generous with his time and expertise for the Institute. He also was a visiting scholar for Stanford’s Hoover Institution on War, Revolution, and Peace.
