A native of Carlisle, Indiana, Miller received his bachelor of science degree in 1938. He received his letters in 1936, '37, '38 as a top-flight middle distance runner on coach Billy Hayes' track team.
After a distinguished career in the Army Air Corps, he served as chief pilot and vice president of Pan American Airways. Miller was the first person to qualify as a commercial jet pilot and was at the controls of the first commercial airliner to make a transatlantic flight. In 1969, he was awarded the IU Distinguished Alumni Service Award.
