About Willard Z. Carr, Jr.

Attorney, philanthropist, and activist are all words that can be used to describe Willard Z. Carr, Jr. Upon completion of his law degree in 1950, he entered the U.S. Air Force and served as a captain in the Judge Advocate General’s Department. In 1952 he joined Gibson, Dunn, & Crutcher of Los Angeles, one of the country’s largest law firms, serving as partner, managing partner, member of the executive committee, and, since his retirement in 1994, of Counsel.

He is an internationally recognized expert on employment law and labor relations, is the author of numerous publications on the subject, and serves as an arbitrator and mediator. He has chaired committees for the American Bar Association, the International Bar Association and the United States Executive Committee of the U.S.-European Top Management Roundtable. Mr. Carr is a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation and a Fellow Emeritus of the College of Labor and Employment Lawyers. The IU School of Law-Bloomington inducted him into the Academy of Law Alumni Fellows, the highest honor bestowed by the school.

His civic and philanthropic contributions include leadership positions with the American Red Cross, United Way, Chamber of Commerce, Police Memorial Foundation, and Zoo Association. Council of Boy Scouts, as well as with the California State Parks Foundation and State World Trade Commission. Mr. Carr and his wife, Margaret, funded an endowment professorship in the School of Law in 1992.
