About Gary D. Wiggins

Point your Web browser to CHEMINFO: Chemical Information Sources from Indiana University, the comprehensive site developed and maintained by Gary Wiggins, and you will find yourself immersed in a rich information environment. Wiggins was the first to compile such a complete collection of resources for chemists on the Internet, and its Web version has evolved, according to Suzanne Thorin, Ruth Lilly University Dean of University Libraries, into "the standard by which other chemistry sites are judged." Wiggins also administers the respected CHMINF-L E-mail list, a list, Thorin said, "to which the nation's academic and corporate chemical information specialists subscribe."

"One of the attributes of supremely successful librarians is that they must excel not only in the field of information science, but also in one or more subject disciplines," said Donna Berg, information scientist at Los Alamos National Laboratory Research Library. "In the current world of on-line computer services, databases, the Internet and the Web, the archetypal librarian must also excel in computer skills and in creative development of electronic services that enable the end user to utilize the computer with ease and simplicity. Gary has been the leader in chemical information."

Wiggins also has an extensive record of leadership at IU, where he has ably combined his interests in information science, chemistry and Slavic languages to build an outstanding career.

"In the past year alone, Gary's initiatives have included setting up and running periodic training courses for the use of the various databases and search programs that are of help to chemists; establishment of a Web site for direct computer access to chemistry journals; establishment of Web sites for the use of the Chemistry Library and for finding chemical information; and improvements in the access to the computers that library patrons use for their searches," said Gary Hieftje, Distinguished Professor of chemistry and former chair of the IUB department.

In 1993, Wiggins received the William Evans Jenkins Award for Outstanding Librarianship, the University Libraries' highest staff honor. He also has been active in the IUB chapter of the American Association of University Professors, the Bloomington Faculty Council and the University Faculty Council.
