John Marshall Lowrie was educated at Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania in 1840. He attended Princeton Theological Seminary, Princeton, New Jersey and received a Doctor of Divinity from Miami University, Oxford, Ohio in 1858.
He received his license to preach from the Newton Presbytery in April of 1842, and was ordained at Blairstown, New Jersey, October, 1843. He pastored congregations in Blairstown and Knowlton, New Jersey (1843-45); Wellsville, Ohio (1846-50); Lancaster, Ohio (1850-56); and Fort Wayne, Indiana (1856-67).
