David Lewis completed a BA in history from Carleton College, an MLS from Columbia University, and earned certificates of advanced study in librarianship from the University of Chicago and Columbia University. His book, Reimagining the Academic Library, was published by Rowman & Littlefield in 2016.
David Lewis began his career at the IUPUI University Library in 1993, the same year that the current building opened. In 2000, he was appointed dean and after 18 years at the helm of the library, he retired in May 2018. Upon retirement, he established the David W. Lewis Student Opportunity Fund to support student workers in the IUPUI University Library. David’s career as an academic library leader for over four decades has been characterized by a record of noteworthy accomplishments in the areas of academic technologies, digital humanities, open access to scholarly and educational resources, library integration into campus and community life, and innovative service development. He is also the recipient of two very significant awards (both awarded in 2018)—the Sagamore of the Wabash, the highest distinction in the state of Indiana, and the 2018 Association of College and Research Libraries’ Academic/Research Librarian of the Year, the highest distinction in academic librarianship. Thank you, David, for all you’ve done to support the University Library.
