Walter Q. Gresham attended the Indiana University Preparatory Department for the 1851-1852 school year. He left IU by September 1852 to study law in Corydon and began practicing law in 1854. His fellow Hoosiers elected him as a representative to the Indiana General Assembly in 1860. During the Civil War, he served in the Union army, beginning as a captain in the 38th Indiana Regiment and ending his service with the rank of general. After the war, Gresham practiced law and served as a federal judge. He was active in politics, serving as President Chester A. Arthur’s Postmaster General (1883-1884) and Secretary of Treasury (1884-1885). Gresham then served in President Grover Cleveland’s administration as Secretary of State from 1893 until his death in 1895. He received an honorary doctorate from IU in 1883. A residence hall dining facility at IU Bloomington is named in his memory.
