Ananthanarayanan Parasuraman received a Bachelor of Technology in Mechanical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology in Madras, India in 1970. He then earned his M.B.A. in Marketing from the Indian Institute of Management in Ahmedabad, India in 1972 and her D.B.A. in Marketing from Indiana University in 1975.
Parasuraman has served as a Research Assistant & Associate at Indian Institute of Management, an Associate Instructor at Indiana University, an Assistant Professor of Marketing at the University of Northern Iowa, and an Assistant, Associate, and Professor of Marketing, Foley's/Federated Professor of Retailing and Marketing Studies, and Federated Professor of Marketing at Texas A&M University. He has also served as Chair of the Marketing Department, Professor and Holder of the James W. McLamore Chair in Marketing, and Vice Dean of Faculty and Director of Doctoral Programs at the School of Business at University of Miami.
Parasuraman's research focuses in the areas of Services Marketing, Service Quality Measurement, Role of Technology in Customer Service, Marketing Research Methodology/Model Building, Business-to-Business Marketing, and Marketing Management and Strategy. He is the author of Marketing Research published in 1986. He is also the co-author of Delivering Quality Service: Balancing Customer Perceptions and Expectations from 1990, Marketing Services: Competing Through Quality from 1991, Techno-Ready Marketing: How and Why Your Customers Adopt Technology from 2001, Marketing Research from 2003, and Service Quality from 2004.
Parasuraman has been the recipient of many awards. Among them are the Government of India Merit Scholarship from 1970 to 1971, Hindustan Lever Limited Industrial Scholarship from 1971 to 1972, the Indiana University Academic Fellowship from 1973 to 1975, Distinguished Teaching Award from the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University in 1975, the Lieber Memorial Teaching Associate Award from Indiana University in 1975, an Outstanding Research Award from the College of Business Administration from Texas A&M University in 1982 & 1987, Business and Technology Research Faculty Fellow from the College of Business Administration in 1984, named Best Professor at University of Miami in 1996, 1998 & 2000, the Provost's Award for Scholarly Research from University of Miami in 1998, the Career Contributions to the Services Discipline Award from the American Marketing Association in 1998, an Outstanding Research Award from the School of Business Administration at the University of Miami in 2000, 2003 & 2005, the Outstanding Marketing Educator Award from the Academy of Marketing Science in 2001, Outstanding Reviewer Award from the Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science from 2000 to 2003, Outstanding Review Award from the Journal of Retailing in 2003, was a Distinguished Fellow at the Academy of Marketing Science in 2004, a Distinguished Alumnus Award from the Indian Institute of Technology in 2005, was 1 of 2 Senior Fellows from the Center for Excellence in Service at the Robert H. Smith School of Business at the University of Maryland in 2005, the Outstanding Review Award from the Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science from 2003 to 2006, an International Fellowship from the Service Research Center at Karlstad University in 2006, a Fellowship at the Center for Services Leadership at the Arizona State University in 2007, the Outstanding Teaching Award from the School of Business Administration at the University of Miami at 2007,an Honorary Professorship from the Oslo School of Management in 2008, was named for the Parasuraman Service Excellence Research Price from Hamdan Bin Mohammed e-University in Dubai in 2008, was an elected member of the Center for Services Leadership Distinguished Faculty at Arizona State University in 2009, an Elsevier Distinguished Scholar Award from the Society of Marketing Advances' in 2009, Best Professor award from EMBA Management Group in 2009, Best Elective Course Instructor award from the University of Miami in 2009 & 2010, and an Honorary Doctorate from Maastricht University in 2011.
