About Beverly J. Armento

Beverly Jeanne Armento received her B.A. in Elementary Education from William Paterson College in 1963. She then earned her M.A.T. in Economic Education from Purdue University in 1969, and her Ed.D. in Social Studies Education from Indiana University in 1977.

Armento is a Research Professor and Chair of the Middle & Secondary Education and Instructional Technology Department at Georgia State University. She previously served as the Director of the National Specialized Center for Learning Theory and Economic Education, the Director for the Center for Business and Economic Education, as a Visiting Professor of Economic Education at the University of Hawaii, as an Associate Instructor at Indiana University Bloomington, an Instructor at Bowie State College in Maryland, a Curriculum Consultant to Prince George's County Public Schools in Maryland, a fifth and sixth grade teacher at McIntosh Middle School in Sarasota, Florida, and a fourth grade teacher at Spring Valley Elementary School in Paramus, New Jersey.

Armento is the co-author of The Houghton-Mifflin Social Studies Series K-8 from 1991, and the The Laidlaw Social Studies Series from 1985. She is the author of Constructing Social Knowledge.

Armento is a member of the American Educational Research Association, the National Council for the Social Studies, the National Association of Economic Educators, the Organization of American Historians, and the Association of Teacher Educators. She has also served as a member of the editorial board for the Theory and Research in Social Education, a member of the research review board for the Journal of Teacher Education, and as a member of the advisory board for the Project on Sex Stereotyping in Education.

Armento has been the recipient of the Rotary Scholarship and the New Jersey State Scholarship from Paterson State College in 1959, an Experienced Teacher Fellowship in Economic Education from Purdue University in 1968, the Lieber Memorial Distinguished Teaching Award from Indiana University in 1974, the Maris M. Proffitt and Mary Higgins Proffitt Dissertation Award from Indiana University in 1977, the Leavey Award for Excellence in Private Enterprise Education from the Freedoms Foundation in 1985, was an Alumni Distinguished Professor from Georgia State University in 1985, an Outstanding Social Studies Educator in Georgia Award from the Georgia Council for the Social Sciences in 1990, and the Outstanding Faculty Teaching Award from Georgia State University in 1994.
