About Bruce D. Mann

Bruce D. Mann is a professor in the Department of Economics at the University of Puget Sound. He came to the university in 1975 after completing his doctoral work at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana. He received his undergraduate degree in economics from Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio in 1969.

One of Dr. Mann's particular areas of teaching interest and research deals with the operations of local economies. He has published research related to the impacts of local government subsidies to businesses, financing for housing, and rent control issues. In addition, Dr. Mann has been active in local community affairs as a consultant for the City of Tacoma, Pierce County government, and numerous civic groups and associations.

Recent consulting work in the local area includes work on Tacoma Public Utilities' telecommunication initiative, the City of Tacoma's plans for the development of the Foss Waterway, and the Tacoma Police Department's plan for patrol vehicle use. Under the sponsorship of a consortium of granting organizations, Professor Mann co-authored the only study on the charitable giving capacity for Pierce County.

One of Dr. Mann's continuing projects is an annual Pierce County forecast, known as Horizons. Organized by the Tacoma-Pierce County Chamber of Commerce in cooperation with local organizations, Dr. Mann and his colleague Dr. Goodman, provide an annual economic outlook for the Pierce County economy. They have been providing this local area forecast for more than ten years.

Dr. Mann teaches specialty courses in the areas of Labor Economics, Law and Economics, Urban Economics, Sports Economics, and the Economics of Nonprofit Organizations.
