Lieber Memorial Associate Instructor Award - 1986

About Heidi Mills

Heidi Mills received her B.S. in Early Childhood Education in 1979, her M.S. in Elementary Education in 1981, and earned her Ed.D. in Language Education in 1986, all from Indiana University.

Mills serves as the John C. Hungerpiller Professor of Elementary Education in the Department of Instruction and Teacher Education and a Curriculum and Development Specialist for the Center for Inquiry at the University of South Carolina. Previously, Mills served as an Experience-based Language Arts Teacher and Consultant in the Child Development Centers for Grand Rapids Public Schools, a Field Experience Coordinator at Indiana University, an Associate Instructor at Indiana University, and a South Carolina Reading Initiative Teaching Team Member.

Mills is the Co-Author of several books including Looking Closely and Listening Carefully: Learning Literacy Through Inquiry from 2004, From the Ground Up: Creating a Culture of Inquiry from 2001, Mathematics in the Making from 1996, Looking Closely from 1992, Living and Learning Mathematics: Stories and Strategies for Supporting Mathematical Literacy from 1990, and Portraits of Whole Language Classrooms: Learning for All Ages from 1990.

Among her many awards, Mills has been the recipient of an Anonymous Graduate Scholarship for Women in Education from the School of Education at Indiana University in 1979, the Iota Chapter of Pi Lambda Theta Research Honoraria in 1985, the Tri Kappa State Scholarship in 1985, a Grant-In-Aid of Research from Indiana University in 1986, the Lieber Distinguished Teaching Award from Indiana University in 1986, a Merit Award from the College of Education at University of South Carolina in 1990, the Blackwell Research Grant from the Center for the Expansion of Language and Thinking in 1990, the Mortar Board's Excellence in Teaching Award from the University of South Carolina in 1990, was a Finalist for the Amoco Outstanding Teaching Award from the University of South Carolina in 1991, the George H. Lackey, Jr. Award in 1999, and the Hungerpiller Professorship from the College of Education at the University of South Carolina in 2004.
