- Lieber Memorial Associate Instructor Award - 1972
Janis Sue Bastain Werner was born in Terre Haute, IN, January 28, 1940. She earned both a bachelor’s and master’s degree from Indiana State University and completed requirements for a doctorate degree at Indiana University with exception of a dissertation. She was the recipient of three National Science Foundation Scholarships.
Mrs. Werner began her teaching career in Vigo County Community Schools; Collett Elementary School; Metcalf Laboratory School in the University of Illinois in Bloomingon/Normal, IL; Monroe County Community School Corporation; Templeton Elementary School and Clear Creek Elementary School. She enjoyed teaching kindergarteners. She was a member of Phi Delta Kappa and president of the Bloomington Area Council of the International Reading Association. She also belonged to the Indiana Retired Teachers Association; the International Reading Association and the National Association for the Education of Young Children. Werner was awarded the Lieber Memorial Teaching Associate Award in 1971. In later years, she was involved in environmental and animal rights causes.
