Pegie Stark Adam holds a B.F.A. in Fine Arts and Printmaking, an M.A. and a Ph.D. in Journalism and Mass Communications from Indiana University.
Pegie is the Director of Stark Adam Designs, which she founded in 1998. She has directed a number of design projects that include newspapers, magazines, corporate publications and websites. Stark Adam is a continuing affiliate of the Poynter Institute for Media Studies in St. Petersburg, Florida, where she served as the Director of the Graphics and Design programs from 1991-1994. She has worked as a graphics editor at The Detroit News, the graphics director at the Detroit Free Press, and as the art editor and designer at the St. Petersburg Times. She was also an Associate Professor at Syracuse University, the University of South Florida and the University of Florida. Other than journalism, she taught design, typography, color theory and application, drawing, lithography, painting, photography, and has owned and operated a lithographic print shop.
Stark Adam's background in Fine Arts and Journalism helped her develop unique design solutions for a wide range of publications. She has worked with news organizations including The Toronto Star, The Independent, London, England, St. Louis Post-Dispatch, The News & Record (Greensboro, NC), The Sowetan (South Africa), AlAhram (Egypt) and many others, in the U.S. and other countries. She worked with Garcia-Media on the redesign of the Staten Island Advance and nameplate revisions on the Hamilton Spectator in Canada. She also co-directed the current EyeTrack 07 research project with Mario Garcia in 1991. Stark Adam is the author of the Poynter Paper, “Color, Contrast and Dimension in News Design,” the co-author, with Mario Garcia, of “Eyes on the News,” the book reporting the results of the Poynter EyeTrac research 1991, and designer for Garcia's third edition of “Contemporary Newspaper Design” as well as “NewspaperEvolutions.”
Stark Adam’s recent work includes the redesign of the National Catholic Reporter newspaper and website, The Repository in Canton, Ohio, the Ohio State University Alumni magazine and website, the Salvador Dali Museum exhibit catalogue "Dali and the Spanish Baroque" and other promotional material for the Museum. Her other redesigns include The Patriot-News,Harrisburg, in Pennsylvania, the Ottawa Citizen, Tech Weekly, and The Weekly for the Ottawa Citizen.
The interactive, online publication of her book “Color, Contrast and Dimension in News Design,” received the 2002 International Interactive Design Award from Communication Arts Magazine.
