About David J. Malik

Professor Malik received his B.S. in Chemistry from California State University, East Bay in 1968, an M.S. in Applied Mathematics a year later, and a Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from the University of California, San Diego in 1976. After a brief Visiting Assistant Professorship at UCSD and a post-doctoral stay at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, he joined IUPUI in 1980 as an assistant professor. From 1990 to 2000, he served as Chairman of the Department of Chemistry. He was a Founding Faculty member of University College in 1997. He was named Chancellor's Professor in 2002. From 2009-2015, he served as Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs at IU Northwest. Upon returning to IUPUI as the interim chair in the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology, he will be the Interim Associate Vice Chancellor for Undergraduate Education and Dean, University College during 2016-17.

Professor Malik's research was originally in theoretical chemistry and focused on energy exchange in atomic-molecular systems, potential energy surfaces, and interactions of molecules with applied fields. More recent work has shifted to issues of academic administration and the pedagogy of chemical education including placement efficacies and peer-led team learning strategies. Through his efforts, IUPUI now has one of the largest programs in PLTL in the country in chemistry, where student success has improved over 40%. He was also a member of the Project Kaleidoscope U.S. Delegation to China addressing innovative pedagogies in science.

Professor Malik is active in the American Chemical Society, serving as a member of the Society Committee on Education, its Vice Chair, and a member/chair of numerous ACS Task Forces and other committees. He was previously Chairman of the Board of Directors, Central Region, of the ACS. He has served on editorial advisory boards of various journals.

Professor Malik has received numerous awards including the American Chemical Society Service Award, Indiana University President's Award, Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching, Intercollegiate Athletics Teaching Awards, FACET, Eileen Bender Memorial Lecturer, and a Teaching Excellence Award from the University of California at San Diego. He has received grants from the U.S. Department of Education, the National Science Foundation, and the American Chemical Society. An advocate for IUPUI professional visibility, he has organized or co-organized numerous scientific meetings on campus, including a recent American Chemical Society Central Regional Meeting. In 2020, Malik was elected a Fellow of the American Chemical Society.
