About Juanita F. Keck

Juanita F. Keck is a Professor Emerita of Nursing and former Chair of the Department of Adult Health at Indiana University-Purdue University in Indianapolis.

Nursing has been characterized as a “high-tech, high-touch” discipline. There is no teaching experience where this duality is more germane than in distance education—a field in which Juanita Fogel Keck has been a pioneer and innovator throughout her career. She has adapted techniques for each new technological advance, from instruction by TV transmission to Web courses, giving hundreds of students nationwide the opportunity to benefit from her expertise.

Keck also has made significant contributions through her own research, which is focused on the development of non-invasive, non-pharmaceutical interventions for pain. One tool she developed, a pain measurement scale for young children and non-verbal adults, has been incorporated into standard practice. For her investigations on the effect of music on circumcision pain, she received a Citation Award from the American Pain Society.

She has been honored for her teaching as well. From IU, Keck has received two prestigious honors: election to the Faculty Colloquium for Excellence in Teaching and the Teaching Excellence Recognition Award. She has been recognized for excellence in teaching by Alpha Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International. In 1999, she was the inaugural recipient of the Juanita Fogel Keck Award for Commitment to Nursing Research, presented by the Patient Care Research Committee of IU and Clarian Health Partners. She also has won awards from such prestigious organizations as the Midwest Nursing Research Society and the American Pain Society.

Her ability to contribute to, inspire and sustain the clinical research efforts of her students has been remarkable. Her students have reported their findings at nearly 50 scientific meetings across the nation and have published 66 articles. She is in demand nationally as a speaker and consultant on teaching and mentoring, curriculum and course design and information technology.
