Michael B. Metzger was the Jean Ann and Donald E. Foster Chair in Business Ethics at the Indiana University's Kelley School of Business. He was been on the Kelley School faculty since 1972, has served as the School's Associate Dean for Academics on three separate occasions, and is a former chair of its Business Law Department.
He received an A.B. from Indiana University in 1966 (political science/forensic studies), and a J.D. from the Indiana University School of Law in 1969. Before entering academia, Professor Metzger held a variety of positions, including Deputy Securities Commissioner, State of Indiana, and Senior Legislative Analyst, Indiana Legislative Services Bureau. He also was in private practice in Indianapolis, Indiana, with the firm of Baratz, Sosin, Jodka, and Metzger. Widely published in legal, business, and ethics journals, his work has appeared in the Georgetown Law Journal, the Vanderbilt Law Review, the Minnesota Law Review, the Ecology Law Quarterly, the Business Ethics Quarterly, the Journal of Business Ethics, and the Southwestern Law Journal, the Journal of Law and Public Policy, as well as numerous others.
Four times he received the American Business Law Journal's award for the best article of the year. Professor Metzger was the winner of 17 awards for teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, including the President's Award for Outstanding Teaching. He was regularly identified by Business Week as one of the school's "Outstanding Faculty." He frequently addressed public and industry groups on legal risk management, business ethics, and critical thinking issues.
Metzger died in May 2020.
