Ivan was a track letterman in 1932, 1933 and 1934 and captain in 1934. He was a football letterman in 1931 and was a member of NCAA championship team in 1932. Ivan was Big Ten indoor and outdoor champion in the 440 and mile relay in both 1933 and 1934 and won IU's first ever Olympic gold medal as a member of the 1,600-meter relay team in the 1932 Olympics in Los Angeles, setting a world record. He later coached track at Brown University for 27 years. Ivan is a member of Indiana Track Hall of Fame and Helms Athletic Hall of Fame.
