Sunder won track letters in 1981, 1982, 1983 and 1984 and won four Big Ten indoor championships at 440 yards, including world indoor record in 1984 and two Big Ten outdoor championships at 400 meters. He was also on the winning relay team with the world best time at 400 meters in 1982. He was NCAA indoor champion in 1983 at 600 yards and a 1983 Bronze Medalist World Champion. Sunder was the 1983 U.S. National Champion at 400 meters. He was the 1983 Olympia Award winner and a member of 1984 U.S. Olympic Team and won gold as leadoff leg in the 4 x 400 relay team. In 1984 IU he was Athlete of the Year, also 1984 Big Ten Athlete of the Year. Sunder still holds Indiana, Big Ten, NCAA and World record in 440 yards indoor and Indiana record at 400 meters outdoor.
