About Howard C. Caldwell, Jr.

Howard Caldwell started his college career at Indiana University, but soon realized that his place was really at Butler. He transferred in the middle of his sophomore year, joining a family legacy that includes his parents, sister and daughter.

Like many alumni of his era, Caldwell grew up in Irvington, on the east side of Indianapolis, where the Butler campus resided during his childhood. He remembers his father's involvement with Butler, from alumni activities to homecoming events at the Sigma Chi house.

In the Caldwell house, Butler was, Caldwell says, "a very positive word, a very positive thought. When I think about it, I never really left Butler. I have always been here, involved in things. I've gotten to emcee all sorts of things and I've been a member of the Ovid Butler Society for years and years."

Caldwell earned his degree in journalism and is well known as the retired news anchor for WRTV-6, where he worked for more than 35 years. He still attends basketball games, bringing his grandchildren and friends, and is the author of Tony Hinkle: Coach for All Seasons. One of his most cherished Butler memories is being awarded an honorary doctorate in 1984.
