About Kumble R. Subbaswamy

Kumble Subbaswamy, who goes by the name Swamy, served as dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Miami from 1997-2000, before beginning his tenure as the dean of the College of Arts & Sciences at IU, following former Dean Morton Lowengrub and acting Dean Russell Hanson. Subbaswamy also holds an appointment as professor of physics. He retained the position for six years, before returning to the University of Kentucky in 2006 to take up the position of University Provost. Currently, he is the Chancellor at the University of Massachusetts - Amherst, where he was appointed in 2012.

Subbaswamy is an IU alumnus, having earned a doctorate in physics in 1976. He has previously taught at the University of California-Irvine and the University of Kentucky, where he served as chair of the Department of Physics and Astronomy as well as associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. While at the University of Kentucky, he served on the Chancellor's Task Force on Realignment and Restructuring, the university's self-study team, and the Advanced Science and Technology Commercialization Center Planning Committee. He was an invited partic ipant in the Pew Higher Education Roundtable. He spent 18 years in Lexington before moving on to Coral Gables, FL for the post at University of Miami. At the University of Miami, he was a leader in efforts by the College of Arts and Sciences there to recruit students more aggressively, review its curriculum, establish faculty workload policies and undertake a vigorous advancement effort.

He is an elected fellow of the American Physical Society, and he has research interests in computational chemistry and condensed matter physics. Subbaswamy has served as the coordinator of the Deans' group of the Association of American Universities, as a member of the Board of the National Association of College and University Business Officers, and as Board Chair of the South Eastern Conference Academic Consortium. Additionally, he is a member of the Board of Directors of the Association of Specialized and Professional Accreditors and has appeared on national and international panels, including the American Council on Education and the German-American Fullbright Commission.
