Chancellor's Professor

About William Bosron

Dr. Bosron received his B.S. from Bowling Green State University and Ph.D. in Biological Chemistry from University of Cincinnati in Ohio. His postdoctoral training was in the Biophysics Research Laboratory at Harvard Medical School. He joined the Departments of Medicine and Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in 1975. He was a visiting professor in the Institute of Biotechnology at University of Cambridge in 1990. He was named a Chancellor's Professor in 2005. He retired in 2009.

Dr. Bosron's main area of research is the enzymology of alcohol and drug metabolism. His laboratory investigated the structure and function of alcohol dehydrogenases involved in ethanol metabolism and carboxylesterases involved in cocaine, heroin, Ritalin and anti-cancer prodrug metabolism. He received a MERIT award from NIAAA for alcohol dehydrogenase studies. He has served on editorial boards of several journals in his field and NIH study sections.

Dr. Bosron served the Medical School as Assistant Dean for Graduate Studies from 1994-2005. He focused on restructuring the combined M.D./Ph.D. program, forming a postbaccalaureate program for disadvantaged and underrepresented minority Medical School applicants and developing new graduate training grants and programs at the School of Medicine. He was the founding director of a Biotechnology Training Program that was developed as part of the Indiana Genomics Initiative project (INGEN). He served as Interim Dean of the School of Science at IUPUI from 2006 to 2008.
