Robert K. Stoelting Professor of Anesthesia

About Robert G. Presson, Jr.

Dr. Presson received a B.A. from Vanderbilt University (chemistry) in 1977, and an M.D. from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in 1981. He completed his residency training in pediatrics at Baylor Affiliated Hospitals in Houston, TX, in 1984 and in anesthesiology at the University of Virginia Hospital in Charlottesville, VA in 1986. Following a fellowship in pediatric anesthesia and critical care at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia in 1987, Dr. Presson joined the faculty of the Department of Anesthesia of Indiana University School of Medicine. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 1993 and Professor with tenure in 1998. In 2011, he was named the Robert K Stoelting Professor and Chair of the Department of Anesthesia.

Dr. Presson is an active clinician providing perioperative care to patients at Riley Children's Hospital, Indiana University Hospital, and critical care services to patients on the Cardiac Critical Care Service at Riley.

In addition to his busy clinical practice, Dr. Presson is an active investigator of the pulmonary circulation, acute lung injury and ischemia reperfusion injury of the lung. He has been a pioneer in the use of intravital microscopy of the lung, and has published a number of important papers in this field. He has served on a number of NIH study sections and has been a reviewer for various journals including American Journal of Physiology, Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, and the Journal of Applied Physiology.
