About Victoria Malawey

Victoria Malawey received her Bachelor of Music from Roosevelt University's Chicago Musical College, and earned her Ph.D. in music theory at the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University in 2007. She studied composition with Robert Lombardo at Roosevelt University and Sven-David Sandström at Indiana University.

Malawey is Assistant Professor of Music at Macalester College where she teaches courses in music theory. Prior to joining the faculty in 2011, Malawey taught at Kenyon College.

Malawey's research interests include the analysis of songs, popular music, music theory pedagogy, and gender studies. She has written articles on a wide range of topics—including Björk’s music, Amy Beach’s songs, and the analysis of cover songs—which have been published in scholarly journals, such as Music Theory Online and The Journal of the Royal Musical Association, and in a collection of essays titled Pop-Culture Pedagogy in the Music Classroom: Teaching Tools from American Idol to YouTube.

As a composer, Malawey has written compositions for mixed chamber and vocal ensembles, which have been performed at venues throughout the U.S. and as far as Athens, Greece.

Malawey's Ph.D. dissertation won the Dean's Dissertation Prize in 2009. She was the recipient of the Mrs. Giles Whiting Teaching Fellowship in 2008–09 from Kenyon College. In 2005, she was awarded the Lieber Memorial Teaching Associate Award at Indiana University.
