Donald Arens was a professor emeritus of endodontics at IU. He attended Indiana University for his undergraduate education, finishing in 1956 with a bachelor's degree in zoology. Arens then continued his IU education at the School of Dentistry, earning a D.D.S. in 1959 and a M.S.D. in 1972. He opened a private practice after his D.D.S. graduation, and later limited it to only endodontics after his M.S.D.
In academics, Arens became a professor at IUSD, Nova Southeastern School of Dental Medicine, and visiting professor at Loma Linda University School of Dentistry. He also served as the President of Continuing Education, chair and president of the nomination committee, and chair of the Indiana Section for the American College of Dentists. Also, he was the founding president of the Harry Healey Study Club, president of the American Association of Endodontists, president of the American Association of Esthetic Dentistry and and a member of the Board of Directors as well as serving as President of the International Federation of Endodontic Association.
