- School of Dentistry Distinguished Alumni Award - 2011
Martin R. Szakaly is a dentist in South Bend. Skakaly’s recent presidency of the Indiana Dental Association was the latest step in a career that has always included organized dentistry as a top priority. As the IDA president, he embraced improving communications, appointing an ad hoc committee to survey new ways to enhance communications on different levels, resulting in a new website for the organization that works for both the IDA members and the general public. On his journey to the presidency of the state organization, this South Bend practitioner faithfully served his local component, the North Central Dental Society; he held each of the society’s officer positions.
He has also served as an IDA trustee and represented the IDA as a delegate to the American Dental Association. Szakaly began practicing in 1978, joining his father's dental practice after he graduated from IUSD. He is a Fellow in the Academy of General Dentistry, the International College of Dentists, the American College of Dentists, and the Pierre Fauchard Academy. In 2011, Szakaly won the Distinguished Alumni Award for the IU School of Dentistry.
