Susan Nevar graduated from Indiana University in 1980 with a degree in physical education. She played both women's softball and volleyball, earning 4 varsity letters in each. While on the diamond, Susan won the Big Ten batting title as a junior and led her team in her senior campaign to a runner-up finish in the AIAW College World Series. From her efforts she received All-American honors from the Amateur Softball Association her senior year.
After her playing career concluded, Susan began her coaching career with Texas A&M as an assistant coach in 1982, the same year the Aggies won the AIAW Title. The following year she helped them win the NCAA title and then finished second at the College World Series in 1984. She continued her career with a brief stint as an assistant coach at Ohio St before accepting the title of head coach at Kent State University in 1986. At Kent St, Susan recorded 289 wins over 11 seasons, including an appearance into the College World Series in 1990 with a 43-9 record resulting in a personal award of Midwest Regional Coach of the Year.
