William Stearman graduated from Columbus High School in 1943 and entered the army, serving for two and a half years with the Third Army Combat Engineers. He enrolled at IU in 1946, graduated in 1949 with a BS degree and received a master's degree in 1952. He was a member of Phi Kappa Psi fraternity, a three-year letter-winner in baseball and won the Balfour Award in 1948.
Stearman was one of the most successful coaches in Indiana high school basketball history. In 41 years of coaching basketball at Waldron, Columbus and Columbus North high schools, his record was 658-318. He won 22 sectional championships, 11 regional championships, and two semi-state championships. Stearman was inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame in 1983 and in 1985 the Columbus North athletic complex was named in his honor.
