Ernest H. Andres came to Bloomington in 1935 from Jeffersonville on a basketball scholarship. Lettering in basketball and baseball, he served as captain of both squads as a senior. In basketball, he garnered first team All-American honors in his senior season, and was instrumental in the Hoosiers' 1938 Big ten baseball co-championship. Following graduation in 1939, Andres played with the professional Louisville Colonels baseball team. He also played with the Boston Red Sox as well as pro basketball with the Indianapolis Kautsky Club.
In 1948, Andres returned to IU to become head baseball coach and an assistant in basketball under Coach Branch McCracken. For 25 years, until 1973, he served as baseball coach. Then he became field secretary for the IU Alumni Association, a position he held until his retirement in 1983; Andres has been associated with IU for almost five decades.
