About Andrew Wellington Cordier

Andrew Wellington Cordier was born in Canton, Ohio in 1901. He received his education at Manchester College, North Manchester, Indiana, (1923-44); the University of Chicago; and the Graduate Institute of International Studies in Geneva, Switzerland. He worked at the U.S. State Department from 1944-46, and then joined the United Nations, where he eventually served as Executive Assistant to the U.N. secretaries general. Cordier was a chief negotiator for the United Nations in the Congo in 1960. He left the U.N. in 1962 to become Dean of the School of International Affairs (SIA) at Columbia University. Cordier swas acting President of Columbia from 1968-1969; and was later he was appointed President (1969-70). When he left the Columbia presidency, he returned to his position as Dean of SIA,where he served until 1972. In 1970 Colunbia University awarded Cordier with the Alexander Hamilton medal, the university's highest honor. Cordier died on Long Island in 1975.
