Byron Kauffman Elliott was raised in a family highly distinguished in Indiana legal circles, no doubt drawing from this environment the aspirations and commitment that led him to high achievement and dedicated service to the state. He graduated from Indiana University cum laude, and from Harvard University with a law degree.
Elliott received appointments in several county and state judiciary systems, including the Judge of Superior Court. With a skilled focus on corporate law, he served first as general counsel and manager of the American Life Convention, and then the John Hancock Mutual Life Insurance Company; rising over 25 years from general counsel to president to chairman of the board. Elliott was the first person ever to chair the annual giving campaign of the Indiana University Foundation, and was chosen to be national chairman of the Sesquicentennial Fund drive.
