About Martha P. Haynes

Martha Haynes is the Goldwin Smith Professor of Astronomy at Cornell University. She graduated from Wellesley College with a B.A. in physics and astronomy in 1973 and attended Indiana University as a graduate student, receiving a M.A. in 1975 and a Ph.D. in 1978.

Haynes worked at the National Astronomy and Ionosphere Center from 1978 to 1981. She then became the assistant director for the Green Bank Telescope. She joined the faculty at Cornell in 1983. Along with collaborator and husband Riccardo Giovanelli, she received the Henry Draper Medal for their studies of the universe in 1989. In 1999, she was elected to American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 2000. Since then, Haynes has held various positions on high-level committees within the national and international community in the field of astronomy such as the Advisory Committee for the Division of Engineering and Physical Sciences of the National Academies (2003-2008), and Astronomy and Astrophysics Decadal Review (2010). She also is the fomer Vice-President of the Executive Committee of the International Astronomical Union from 2006-2012.

Currently, Dr. Haynes is the co-lead of the ALFALFA: the Arecibo Legacy Fast ALFA Survey.
