- School of Public Health John R. Endwright Alumni Service Award - 1986
Sam Newberg was an Assistant Professor Emeritus of Physical Education at the School of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation. A New York City native, Newberg attended Iowa State Teachers College until 1941, when he took a break from his studies to serve in the United States Navy during World War II. After his discharge at the end of the war, Newberg returned to school and graduated in 1947.
Next, he enrolled at Indiana University and received his masters' degree in 1950 and a director's degree in 1952. Newberg joined the faculty at HPER and remained there until he retired in 1984. During his time at IU, he was also the coordinator of the athletic training department. Newberg kept statistics at IU football and basketball games for 57 years. He was a member of Alpha Chapter of Phi Delta Kappa, Suburban Kiwanis, James Woolery Post #18 of the American Legion, Indiana University Varsity Club, NATA( National Athletic Trainers Assoc.) and an honorary I-Man. In 1986, HPER awarded him the John R. Endwright Alumni Service Award for his long-time effort at the school.
