About Clarence Benjamin Dutton

Clarence Benjamin Dutton was well-known for his scholarly and progressive ideas regarding needed reforms in the legal system as a senior partner with a prestigious Indianapolis law firm. He graduated from Indiana University with a B.S. in business and the L.L.B.

As a young graduate he taught courses in both the School of Business and School of Law. Throughout the years, he was in the mainstream of events affecting the legal profession; he served as president of the Indiana State Bar Association and as secretary of the Civil Code Study Commission, which drafted the first major revision of the Revised Code of Civil Procedure in nearly 100 years. On the national scene, he was a member of the American Bar Association House of Delegates, its Board of Governors, and numerous other committees and commissions.

His continued association with IU alumni groups was an important part of his life. Dutton was president of the IU Alumni Club of Indianapolis, the Law Alumni Association, and the IU Alumni Association. He was a member of the School of Law's Board of Visitors and has been inducted into the Academy of Law Alumni Fellows. The quality of IU's law school will be forever enhanced by the professorship that he endowed.
