- Gertrude Rich Award - 1985
Mrs. Gene Lois (Portteus) Branigin was born in Franklin, Indiana. An IU alumna, she received a bachleor's degree in English in 1934. Her husband, Elba Branigin (LL.B. 1934), was senior partner with the Franklin law firm of Branigin, DeMoss & Jones. Early in his career he also served a term as assistant U.S. attorney for the southern district of Indiana. Among his many civic activities, he was chairman of the board of trustees of Franklin College.
Mrs. Branigin remained active with the university all her life. She served for three years on the executive council of the IU Alumni Association, and was a recipient in 1985 of the Association's Gertrude Rich Award. She was the sister-in-law of former Indiana governor Roger Branigin. Indiana University's law school has been greatly assisted by a generous scholarship fund in the Branigin name, provided by Gene's will.
