Neil A. Springer is the retired president and chief operating officer of Navistar International Corporation and Navistar International Transportation Corporation, the leading manufacturer of medium and heavy trucks in North America for the past nine years. Navistar is also the worldwide leader in diesel engines in the 125-250 horsepower range. During 1989 the company improved its share of the medium and heavy truck market to 27.5 percent and produced a record 170,000 engines at its Indianapolis and Melrose Park, Illinois, engine plants.
Mr. Springer, a native of Fort Wayne, earned a BS degree in accounting from Indiana University in 1960 and an MBA degree from the University of Dayton. He began his career in 1960 at Navistar's truck assembly plant at Fort Wayne. From 1960 to 1970 he served in a number of manufacturing positions at Navistar facilities in Springfield, Ohio, and Bridgeport, Connecticut, as well as in Fort Wayne.
In 1970, Mr. Springer moved to Navistar World Headquarters in Chicago and served as staff assistant, assistant corporate comptroller, and vice president of finance for the Agricultural Equipment Group. Rejoining the Truck Group in 1979, he became president in August 1982. He served as president and chief operating officer of Navistar International Corporation from 1984 to 1987 when he was named chairman, president, and chief executive officer of Navistar International Transportation Corporation. He retired in 1990.
Mr. Springer is chairman of Century Companies of America and a member of the board of directors of Index Corporation. Within the truck industry, he is chairman of the U.S. Motor Vehicle Manufacturers Association, a director of the American Trucking Foundation, and a member of the executive committee of the Highway Users Federation for Safety and Mobility. He also serves on the Dean's Advisory Council of the Indiana University School of Business and on the board of directors of Wittenberg University.
Mr. Springer and his wife Janet have three children. They live in Wheaton, Illinois.
