Edgar Howard Sturtevant was born in Jacksonville, Illinois on March 7, 1875. He enrolled at the University of Chicago and earned a Ph.D. in 1901. He served as an assistant professor of classical languages at Columbia University in New York prior to his employment at Yale University in 1923.
He received a Doctor of Laws honorary degree from Indiana University in 1940. He passed away on July 1, 1952 in Branford, Connecticut.
