About Edmund F. Ball

Born in Muncie, Indiana, Edmund Ball attended Wabash College and Yale University. He held a Ph.B. degree from Yale, an honorary Doctor of Humanities degree from Wabash, and LL.D. degrees from Ball State and DePauw Universities. His association with Ball Brothers Company began following his graduation. He progressed through the offices of Assistant Secretary, Vice President, Director, and Executive Vice President, to that of President in 1948, and served in this capacity until 1963 and again from 1968 to 1971. He was chairman of the Company's Board, dating from 1956, and he was also Chairman of the Board of Ball Brothers Foundation. Mr. Ball was Chairman of the Muncie Aviation Corporation, President of Muncie Airport, Inc., and a Director and President of Ball Memorial Hospital. he was a director of numerous enterprises, including the American National Bank and Trust Company and the Merchants National Bank in Muncie, Borg-Warner Corporation, Tomlinson Fleet Corporation of Cleveland, Indiana Bell Telephone Company, and American Fletcher Corporation of Indianapolis.

Mr. Ball was a Trustee of Wabash College and of the Asheville (North Carolina) School for Boys; he shared the family's traditionally staunch supportive interest in Ball State University. He gave significant service on the Council of the University of Chicago School of Business, on the National Council of the Humanities, as a member of the Southwest Research Institute and of the Glass Container Manufacturers Institute, of which he was a president and Trustee. The series of orbital solar observatories developed by the Ball Brothers Research Corporation, a subsidiary of Ball Brothers Company, for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration has been and will continue to be of vital importance to space exploration.
