Dr. V. Kenneth Stoelting was a former IUSM professor and alumnus who created the Department of Anesthesia at Indiana University and made it one of the largest in the country in several decades. He received his M.D. degree from Indiana University in 1936 and started his anesthesia training in Madison WI, and, after service as an Army medical officer, completed it in Iowa City in 1947. Afterwards, Dr. Stoelting returned to Indiana University to create there a much-needed anesthesia department at the medical school.
Dr. Stoelting had a great interest in research, especially the study of new drug. He authored and co-authored 72 scientific articles throughout his career. His son, Robert, also became a respected physician and IUSM professor. Stoelting received the IUSM Distinguished Alumni Award in 1981.
