E. Ross Bartley Award - 1992
Bloomington, Indiana
Presenter: Thomas Ehrlich

About John M. Miller

Dr. John M. Miller began his tenure with Indiana University in 1954, left the next year for the U.S Navy, and returned in 1957. During his employment, he held various positions at IU including university physician, assistant director and director for Student Health Service, director of sports medicine, and professor of kinesiology.

Dr. Miller has been a member of several professional organizations, including the Mid America College Health Association, National Athletic Trainers Association, National Safety Council (College and University Section), American College of Sports Medicine, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He has served as a consultant to various universities and to the American Academy of Sports Physicians, as an advisory member to the Indiana Athletic Trainers Association, as a member of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education and Recreation, and as crew chief for NCAA Drug Testing. The author of several publications and papers, Dr. Miller has received the Higham, Neilson, Whitridge and Reid Research Award, presented by the American College Health Association, the Junior Chamber of Commerce Distinguished Service Award, and the Ruth E. Boynton Award from the American College Health Association.

A native of Iowa City, Iowa, Dr. Miller received his bachelor's and medical degrees from the University of Iowa. He has been a member of the Bloomington Rotary Club, Bloomington Hospital Advisory Council, Bloomington Hospital Strategic Planning Committee and the IU Varsity Club and Loyalty Club. For four decades, John Miller served as a great friend of Indiana University and a great friend of the Bloomington and Monroe County communities and his receipt in 1993 of the E. Ross Bartley Award, the highest staff honor bestowed at Indiana University, reflected his dedication. He was a leader and mentor for our faculty in athletics, physical education, and sports medicine and worked diligently to improve safety in sports, a passion for which he was recognized with the President's Challenge Cup Award for Outstanding Contributions in the Field of Sports Medicine from the National Athletic Trainers Association.

Dr. Miller's talents were also shared with community organizations like the Salvation Army in Bloomington where he served for 35 years as a board member, the Bloomington Hospital, the Rotary Club, Middleway House, and many others. John Miller contributed in wonderful ways to his profession, to our communities, and to the well being of young people in sports across the country. He is a splendid exemplar of the qualities recognized by the E. Ross Bartley Award.
