On January 9, 1994, former Physical Plant Associate Director James R. Davis was one of two IU retirees honored with the E. Ross Bartley Memorial Award. Davis, who retired after 46 consecutive years at the Physical Plant, began in the position of sheet metal helper and worked his way up to associate director.
Those who worked with Jim knew him as someone "who managed and led from the heart. His love for Indiana University and his community was found in every decision he made. He was a valuable colleague and partner," according to Vice President for Administration Terry Clapacs. Chancellor Herman B Wells believed that Davis embodied the IU spirit, even possessing many of the qualities of E. Ross Bartley himself, making him a "superb candidate" for the award.
In addition to being a dedicated IU employee, Davis had an exemplary record of service to his community and country, completing a distinguished 34-year military career in which he rose to the rank of Colonel in the Indiana Army National Guard.
