James R. Hetherington is a retired Indianapolis journalist and public relations executive who graduated from the School of Journalism in 1953. He was the vice president for corporate communications and public relations director for American United Life Insurance Company, where he worked for 21 years until his retirement in 1995. Before entering the public relations field, Hetherington spent nineteen years in journalism as the Indiana editor of the Louisville Times from 1955-1961, assistant city editor of the Indianapolis Times from 1961-1963, and as editorial editor and documentary editor of the WFBM radio and television stations from 1963-1974.
At IU, he was the editor in chief for the IDS during his senior year. He also is a past president of five organizations, including the Hoosier chapter of the Public Relations Society of America, IPRS, the Society of Professional Journalists (Sigma Delta Chi), the Indianapolis Press Club and the Indianapolis Press Club Foundation.
