Steve won track letters in 1973, 1974, 1975 and 1976 and cross county letters in 1971, 1972, 1974 and 1975. He served as co-captain of track and captain of cross country as a senior and won the Big Ten title in the mile in 1975 and went on to earn All-America honors in the event that season. He is the former owner of four IU distance records and first IU miler to break the 4:00 barrier with a 3:59.6 in 1975. He anchored four-mile relay to a world record in 1975 and was a member of six Big Ten championship teams in track and cross country. Steve ranked fourth in the U.S. in the 1,500-meters and a top candidate to make the 1976 U.S. Olympic Team before a near fatal accident in 1976 when he was hit by a car while running, but he came back to run competitively after recovering.
